Cologne Cathedral

Not so long ago, I climbed to the very top of the Kölner Dom (Cologne Cathedral). All of us AustauschSchüler (Exchange students) that live near Köln (Cologne) all met up to do this together. There was about 533 steps to get to the top and higher that you climb you start to notice that the steps cave in a little bit. When we finally got to the top after looking at the view
we noticed that everybody has written all over the walls. Though it was a pity to see all the of the writing to see writing all over the place I was excited to find "CBYX of 2012" and "Afs # 49".

After finishing walking around the top we went down to see the huge bell, which happend to start ringing right as we got to it. I was the loudest thing I have ever heard, I could feel my whole body vibrating.
while journeying back down the stairs we found a random hole in the wall, of corse I had to stop for a photo. After that we all stopped for an eis (Ice cream) and the visited the bridge with all the locks. (The story is that people put a lock on the bridge, they symbolize their love for each other and then they throw the key way into the Rhein River)

Thank you for reading

Cbyx Scholar

Cbyx Scholar

I am proud to call myself a Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange Student. Funded by the Department of State along with German Bundestag. Fifty students from each organization (Organized by state) every year are carefully selected to be sent to Germany for one year with the purpose of learning the German language and culture, as well as sharing American culture. While I study a gap year I proudly represent my country as a “Young Ambassador”. From the beginning of my program I was given a “crash corse” of intensive language which lasted six hours every day (excluding Sundays) with the duration of one month. The remainder of my year is spent immersed in the country, living with a host family in cologne and attending a German high school.

School Notes - Random Thoughts Daily

School Notes

Having ever class auf Deutsch is not the easiest; In fact most times I don't have the faintest idea as to whats going on. During this time I write down random notes of ideas that are going on inside of my head. (That way I don't fall asleep during to the lesson)

Mathe

The teacher is writing very small.
Talking very very fast.
I'm sitting the the back
And I forgot my contacts today.
I have no idea what is going on.

Isn't math supposed to be universal? Wtf Is going on...

Germans are perfectionists, they always use a ruler to draw their graphs

The Dude to my left is named Timo, the one to my right keeps calling his name (My Name is Tim). Every time he says Timo I look over to him like an idiot.

Oh, I hope the class will end ever soon. The wheel in my head just isn't turning.

Anybody who has ever thought that their class was hard should try taking it in another language you don't understand very well, I guarantee you'll reconsider. It's a lot easier then you originally thought.

Where are my contacts....
I'm never forgetting them again..

I SWEAR if this kid say's Timo one more time I will punch him
...AND scream.

Math is over!

Zeit - Rough translation.

There is a lot of different times for people to do different things.
There is a time to live.
There is a time to enjoy.
There is a time to love.
There is a time for everything.
... There was probably a lot more.. but thats what I got out of it.

I'm Excited for Ice Skating.
Maybe I'll learn to play guitar this year.
Jan is trying to write with both hands.

I think I'm distracting the class..
Everything happens for a reason, Eh?

Why do the teachers write halfway in cursive and random letters regular.
Just choose Dang it!

Vielleicht ich should schreibe auf Deutsch.
Ich habe hunger.
Ich habe sehr große hunger.
Ich möchte Essen.
Ich möchte zu schlafen.
Das is alles Deutsch Ich wise.
(Ok I really know a lot more then that)

I'm not quite sure why these teachers
ALL have their windows open
it's freezing outside.
Ugh Desert people Problems..

Yeah Germans are defiantly Perfectionists
Theres that ruler again....

It is an American thing to say like a lot! Shoot.
I am a Stereotypical American..

I feel like I'm Being watched
...oh wait that must be the teacher

Oh, I'm sleepy

Don't Worry, Be Happy
Life's Better that Way

Chemistry

When you talk to me don't expect English
 And don't expect Deutsch.
I ONLY SPEAK DANGLISH

"Remove By Friction"
Deutschland has crazy pens that rub off. Woah.
That's Chemistry right?

Why are there RED Dodger Hats here..
Does not compute.

I really need to sport; I'm getting fat.
I'm going to play Hockey.
 I am hungry.
Shoot. Stop eating so much Fatty.
SOooOooOoOo hungry.
When can I go home and eat.

Notes Of a CBYXER

Notes Of a CBYXER

Contact Information

First I was given all the contact info, the phone numbers, important e-mails, addresses, and such. Not so interesting.

Host Family

They are as excited to meet me as I am to meet them so don't worry. Things that will help: Always give feedback. Explain weird behavior. Make sure to communicate as much as possible. Body Language, Body Language, Body Language. A little bit about Germans: They Are blunt. It's Harder to switch languages once you meet somebody so talk German to my host family (Probably only best for Friends I disagree with the host family english part) They like to save energy, be concentrative.

School, Friends, & Learning German

It's Important to introduce myself to many people. Thank the Principal because he accepted me to his school. I should look for German Friends. I should speak in Deutsch to my German friends, not English. (UNLESS ITS ENGLISH CLASS OF CORSE because you HAVE to speak English in English class) Friends will want me to drink alcohol, I can't do that. Nobody Should expect me to be fluent in German so Just Chill out a little bit. Don't talk while the Teacher talks... It's impolite

Ambassadorship

I am a Representative of the USA. It's possible that people I meet could have never met an American before and it's important that I make a good Impression! Being a good representative means I need to take the time to understand and learn the culture and also be able to explain my own culture and relate it to theirs.

There is controversy about German & American relations, some people don't like the united states. Show them that We are not so different and expect this to happen in some cases.

Know which topics are sensitive and how to handle talking about them.

Understand German Laws: Germans have strict Data rules. If you don't pay for it most likely its illegal, don't do it. Don'tStealDontFightDontSignContractsDontDoAnythingIllegal.

Living life in a Monastery but Mostly about Hedersleben.

Living life in a Monastery but Mostly about Hedersleben.
  • Living with 64 other kids is pretty great. I get headaches all the time but it’s never lonely. The Monastery is huge and pretty Spooky, especially if your room is on the 3rd floor! My room is on the 2nd and I have to roommates. I could probably think of some complaints about them but there pretty cool so I wont say them.

Funny Story:  It’s 15 minutes before room checks, Neither of my roommates are in the room yet so Christine decides that she is going to sleep in my roommates bed (His nickname is Sassy) because she was tired and our whole little group wanted to see his reaction we all let her sleep. About 2 minutes before “Lights out” everybody is about to give up on waiting for him, accept for Christine of corse because she was knocked out. Then he walks in. The look on his face was priceless. Boy Was he surprised. ;) He just kept shouting about his new sheets that he got that day.
A few cool things about this tiny tiny place :
#1 We call them the “Guardian Horses” that live in the yard of the monastery (They were standing in the gateway “guarding” the way.) Anyways they let you ride them.. Though they pretty much just stand there and heads up, their pretty dirty. Still It was fun though!
#2 The Dungeon. It’s Freaking scary down there and ff corse its locked but if you go around to the back there is a window that opens and lets you into it, then the door opens from the other side. There’s this weird room inside that has a pad of paper and pencil where the.. Heater? is. It’s very dark and has lots of spiders. I wont be going there again anytime soon.
#3 They have told us stories about the nuns that were buried alive while this place was built as punishment for doing certain things ... I’m not sure if its really true but I feel like this place is haunted.
#4 Wifi (wlan) In the beginning they all got upset about us getting on the wifi before they gave us the password BUT they are the ones that haven’t changed the password in years and its literally just straight across the number keyboard starting with 1 and ending with 0... Now, If you actually want to use the Wi-fi you have to use one of the “Wifi rooms” Which is actually two of the classrooms on the second floor. (rooms 4 & 5 I think) Though they have since started locking it during certain times and unfortunately the internet doesn’t work a step outside the room. have no fear, Just go outside to the front in the grass (Past the 2nd door) It happens to work there quite well. Just don’t tell all your friends because the more people that connect the less it works ;)  also as long as you computer connects skype and other apps like this will work, even if the regular internet wont!!
#5 The people of this village avoid us like the plague, at first we thought that they just didn't like us (Which is still debatable) Until I used my super German Language skills to talk some people our age and found out that nobody here speaks English, even the teenagers. Thats why they don’t come near us, Once I’ve started talking German to them, they actually are pretty nice. (Most of the time anyways)
#6 The little kids that run around the camp. They are very shy at first and then they hang around you and it hits you. They are the worst potty mouths, even worse then US and they are like 8 years old! Every other word that comes out of their mouth is either Fuck or Scheiße. I think that who ever was in the group last year taught them some stuff! :P
#7 German classes, There intense but totally worth it. I’ve learned more in 12 days that I have learned in spanish for two years. We have classes 6 hours a day Mon-Fri then 3 hours on Sat. They are pretty strict about studying during study time everyday 1-2 pm. I try to study but most of the time I’m just brain dead....

Thats all for now. Catch you next time

Recipient Status!!

What a summer this has been! In The blink of an eye I've visited my parents in Las Vegas, become a lifeguard at Wet 'n' Wild, and been was moved up to be a recipient in the Cbyx Program! (Otherwise Known As A FULL Scholarship To GERMANY)

My job at Wet 'n' Wild has been a truly great experience. I haven't ever thought about myself as being lifeguard material before but somehow I ended up as one. I've had some pretty great times, my favorite part being that I could ride all the rides as much as I wanted and pretty much everyday! It's so crazy to fathom that not only I somehow became a lifeguard but that my time as one is already up! My mom has always told me to enjoy my time because it's going to start flying, who would have known how true that could really be! Hello Wake up Call!!

Now. Today was my last day at my job as a lifeguard and there are only 8 days before I leave for D.C. and later Germany (With a 4 hour layover in New York!!!) My plan you may ask? My plan for today is to hangout for my Aunt who has just flown into town to visit me for the day, Then have a blast at my goodbye party tomorrow, and lastly just relax for the next 8 days hanging out with my friends and family.

The Next Chapter of My Life Is About to Begin. Ready or Not here I come!!!!

Now That I’ve had some time to reflect and process whats going on in my life, it’s time to write and tell the whole world about it.
It all started with over the summer traveling to Germany with a good friend. I totally fell in love with this exotic place. Everything about this place was strange and new AND Wonderful. I did a lot of sight seeing, met a whole bunch of great people, Tried all kinds of great food, and Experienced the culture of a Foreign land.
Coming home was something that I had to do but I did so knowing that someday I would love to go back if even if only for a vacation. As the Months past I focused on school and my grades to keep me from thinking about my summer paradise but the idea of going back kept popping up in my mind until finally I decided that I would look into studying abroad and later on pursuing it.
I found an Organization that would send me to the area of Germany that I had been too before and desired to go back to (Frankfurt) but there was a huge obstacle to tackle, Paying for my trip. After talking on the phone for about an hour somebody who worked at the origination gave me information about the Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange program witch provides FULL scholarships to 50 people to study in Germany. I immediately set out to get this scholarship.
The First Step : A lengthy application with a lot of information about myself and my family, A letter to my Would Be host family, Six short essay questions, Letters of Recommendation, and Finally information about my congressman and school.
On February 26, 2013 I was informed that I was among one of the 64 Finalists that would be chosen to go to Germany; I was Ecstatic! They also told me that on March 10, 2013 they were flying to Phoenix To meet me and a few other people who were also finalists that lived here in Arizona for an Interview.
My Interview went great! At Fist I was a little nevus but as soon as all the introductions were finished that all went away. They were so nice and were so easy to be comfortable to be around. They asked me a lot of questions and I had a blast being with them.
While at the interview they gave me the Great News that everybody in our finalist group would at least walk out of the program with at least an Alternate Position. As you can Imagine this gave me a lot of hope that I would be able to go! After my interview I was given a Packet for their partner organization which was pretty long but also similar to my first application, which made it somewhat easier.
Recently On April First I was Notified that I would be an Alternate to go to Germany. My First reaction was huge disappointment in myself but then I thought more about my situation and realized how lucky I am to be in the position of an Alternate, and a position that a few hundred other people that did not get as far as me would love to be in.
A few days ago I was told that I would be sent Flight Information to the Orientation (Which I herd would be In Michigan) And I am Totally excited for.
Now I am preparing for college and Waiting to find out if I will be put in the position to be sent to Germany or not. May the odd’s be ever in my favor.
